Princess Elisabeth Station, Belgian Antartica Research Base

Johan Berte led the design for the Belgian Princess Elisabeth Station in Utsteinen Nunatak in Dronning Maud Land. It is a zero emission Antartic base that creates all of its own energy and recycles its waste water. Scientists began use of the structure in 2009.

The sleek aerodynamic form allows the base to sit comfortably in fierce winds atop a ridge, while nine wind turbines generate electricity. Living and working quarters for 16 workers fit tightly above a garage for snow vehicles. This project was recently shortlisted for a Future Energy Prize.
