Starbirth Factories

Two large stellar nurseries form big bubbles in space in this new image from WISE, a small space telescope. Known as the Heart (left) and Soul nebulae, they span a combined 580 light-years. They have given birth to thousands of stars, with many more still taking shape. This image shows the two nebulae in infrared wavelengths, which are invisible to the human eye. Blue indicates stars, while green and red represent the cool clouds of gas and dust around the stars -- the raw material for more stars. The nebulae are about 6,000 light-years away, in the constellation Cassiopeia. [NASA/JPL/UCLA]
