Martian Rapids

An ancient riverbed rolls across Mars in this recent image from Mars Express. The large crater at top right, known as Oraibi, is about 20 miles across and is filled with sediments from the water, which was flowing from bottom to top (south to north). The powerful flow also wore down the crater's rim and sculpted smaller craters and hills into teardrop-shaped islands. More recent impact craters, which were created in the sediments, are much sharper. This region is part of Ares Vallis, near the landing site of the first Mars rover, Pathfinder.
