Dressed for Success (in Space)

MIT engineering professor Dava Newman models a concept for a new type of space suit she and her colleagues have been developing. Instead of a puffy balloon, as astronauts wear today, the Bio-Suit fits like a second skin, relying on the suit itself to provide pressure instead of air inside the suit. Researchers hope that a suit like this would make it easier to work in space or on the surface of the Moon or Mars, allowing astronauts to accomplish more with less exertion. [Donna Coveney/MIT]
