Cold Fingers

Fingers of cold dust glow orange, red, and yellow in this infrared image of a wide swath of the Milky Way galaxy. These tendrils fill giant clouds within about 500 light-years of the Sun, where new stars are taking shape. The image is from the orbiting Planck telescope, which is surveying the galaxy at wavelengths that are invisible to the human eye. The pink horizontal line is the plane of the galaxy, which is filled with much more material. [ESA/HFI Consortium/IRAS]
