On the 75th anniversary of Amelia Earhart's disappearance, here's a look back at the trailblazing aviator.

Among her many record breaking flights, Amelia Earhart made the first solo flight from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California, as well as the first nonstop flight from Mexico City to New York.

In 1936, Amelia Earhart began preparations for her around-the-world flight attempt.

To that end, a special Lockheed Electra 10E was built and modified specifically for the trip.

The aircraft was modified to hold an exceptionally large fuel tank for the journey - which was planned to be the world's longest attempt, covering some 29,000 miles.

Experienced navigator Fred Noonan was selected to accompany Amelia Earhart on the trip.

The pair departed from Oakland, California, for their first leg of the flight on St. Patrick's day in 1937.

After taking off from Hawaii for the second leg of the flight, Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Electra suffered severe damage, resulting in a cancellation of the flight attempt.

Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan soon embarked on a second attempt, however, this time heading west to east.

image-am8
Beginning in California, the journey took them to South America, Africa and South East Asia.

image-am5
By the time they made it to New Guinea, they had covered 22,000 miles, well over more than half the trip.

On July 2, Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan took off in pursuit of Howland Island. They never made it to their destination however, and their last known position was over the Nukumanu Islands.

image-am3
Theories surrounding their disappearance continue today, with the predominant belief being that the Electra ran out of fuel and Earhart and Noonan attempted to ditch the aircraft at sea.

Another group, however, is exploring the theory that the pair made an emergency landing near the islando of Nikumaroro and maintained a castaway presence there for some time.

The zero emissions B12/69EV race car is powered by an 850 horsepower electric drivetrain. The car not only impressed the crowd of fans, but Drayson’s technical team was also impressed with the prototype’s reliability and overall performance at the event.
“The car was just stellar today. As the track dried out and we could use all the torque from the electric drive, our times kept improving. I am delighted that we have achieved this record on our first public outing with the car,” stated Lord Drayson, Managing Partner at Drayson Racing Technologies.
“Electric racing is set to transform the future of our sport and through continued advances in technology, we now have a viable alternative to fossil fuels. The Festival of Speed attracts an outstanding number of visitors and is the perfect place for us to demonstrate our car to the public for the first time.”
In addition to its 850 horsepower electric drivetrain, the B12/69EV features new technology like inductive charging that allows the battery to be recharged through charging spots on the floor, effectively doing away with typical charging cables.

Kinetic Rain - the world’s largest moving art sculpture - Singapore Changi’s Terminal 1

VIDEO: World’s largest ‘kinetic art sculpture’ unveiled at Changi Airport
It is called Kinetic Rain, it is the world’s largest moving art sculpture – and it is based in an airport check-in hall.

Conceived as part of the refurbishments to Singapore Changi’s Terminal 1, the installation is made up of 1,216 bronze droplets connected to computer-controlled motors.

The motors control the movement of each droplet, allowing the droplets to make up multiple different aviation-related shapes.

Among the different forms the droplets take are an aeroplane, a hot air balloon, a kite, a dragon and a flock of birds.

Kinetic Rain, which was unveiled this week, took 20 months to put together, with artists, programmers and technologists, working as a team to create the masterpiece.

Yeo Kia Thye, senior vice president for airport operations, Changi Airport Group, said: “With more than a thousand raindrops working together in harmony, Kinetic Rain symbolises the thousands in the airport community who work together every day to provide our passengers and visitors with a positively surprising and memorable Changi experience.”

Audio commentary and a video – which passengers can download to their smartphone – are available for those wanting to know more about the sculpture.

ROLLS-ROYCE REVEALS WORLD'S ONLY LEGO JET ENGINE

Rolls-Royce reveals world's only LEGO jet engine
Visitors to the Farnborough International Airshow today saw something truly unique – the world's first and only Lego jet engine!

Built by Rolls-Royce and made entirely of Lego, the engine is a half size replica of the RR Trent 1000, which powers the B787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The one of a kind Lego structure shows the complex inner workings of a jet engine and took four people eight weeks to complete.

Including 152,455 Lego bricks, the engine weighs 307 kilos and is over two metre long and 1.5 metres wide.

Over 160 separate engine components were built and joined together in order to replicate a real jet engine.

Everything from the large fan blades which suck air into the engine down to the combustion chambers where fuel is burned, had to be analysed and replicated using the world famous building blocks.

The engine is part of a display in the Innovation Zone at Farnborough International Airshow, an area designed to engage young people in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Paul Stein, Rolls-Royce's chief scientific officer, says: “Engineers have critical roles to play in solving the challenges of tomorrow, not least designing aircraft engines that will power people to the furthest corners of the world more efficiently.

"We are delighted to showcase this Lego engine, the first of its kind in the world, and we are very pleased some of our own graduates and apprentices have contributed to building it, ensuring it is as realistic as possible.

"What we do is exciting and we hope that this representation of our technology will help to enthuse and inspire the potential scientists and engineers of the future about the career opportunities they could pursue.”

A team of graduates and apprentices from Rolls-Royce used their knowledge of the Trent 1000 engine to work with the company Bright Bricks, experts in Lego, to produce the most complex Lego structure ever built.

Ben Russell, Rolls-Royce, higher technical apprentice says: “This is been such an exciting project to be a part of and something I never imagined I’d get to do.

"Working as an apprentice in a high tech company like Rolls-Royce gives you the opportunity to learn about some of the most fascinating and advanced products in the world, and I hope our Lego engine will show others how exciting a career in engineering can be.”
